Goa, September 29, 2025: On the occasion of World Heart Day, Manipal Hospital Goa announced a major milestone in cardiac care by presenting the first successful Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) procedure performed in Goa and the Konkan region. The landmark case involved a 77-year-old male patient, Mahesh (Name changed), suffering from severe mitral regurgitation and chronic heart failure. The procedure was carried out by Dr Nikhil Sontakke, Consultant in Interventional Cardiology and Structural Heart Disease, along with a multidisciplinary Heart Team comprising a cardiac anaesthetist, cardiac surgeon, cardiac imaging specialist, and cath lab staff. The welcome speech was given by
Mahesh came to the hospital with a long history of complex heart disease. He had previously undergone bypass surgery and multiple angioplasties, and also suffered from diabetes, liver cirrhosis, and a borderline kidney disorder. Despite being on optimal medication for chronic heart failure, he developed progressive breathlessness, and further evaluation revealed a severely leaking mitral valve, causing severe mitral regurgitation. Since he was considered unfit for open-heart surgery, TEER using the MyClip device was chosen as the safest treatment option.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Nikhil Sontakke said, “This pioneering TEER procedure is a breakthrough for cardiac patients in Goa. For elderly patients with severe valve disease and high surgical risk, TEER offers a safe, minimally invasive, and effective alternative to open-heart surgery. With this advancement, we canx provide life-saving treatment options within Goa itself, ensuring patients do not have to travel outside the state for advanced cardiac care.”
The introduction of the TEER procedure in Goa is a breakthrough in regional cardiac care, bringing advanced treatment closer to patients who previously had to travel to metropolitan cities. With a growing elderly population and rising cases of heart failure and valve disease, many high-risk patients now have access to a safe, minimally invasive alternative to open-heart surgery within the state. This milestone eases the burden of long-distance travel and positions Goa as an emerging hub for advanced cardiac therapies.
Mr. Surendra Prasad, Hospital Director, said, “Mahesh’s case highlights the challenges of treating patients with multiple health complications such as heart disease, diabetes, and liver and kidney disorders. At our hospital, we are committed to bringing advanced treatments and multidisciplinary care under one roof, so that even the most complex cases can be managed with the best possible outcomes.”
The event was graciously hosted by Mr. Hariprasad M.V., Head of Sales & Marketing at Manipal Hospital Goa. During the press meet, the cardiology team from Manipal Hospitals, including Dr. Jyoti Kunsur, Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Sabyasachi Mukhopadhyay, Consultant – Interventional Cardiology, Dr. Noel Hendriques, Consultant – Cardiology, Dr. Rakesh Deshmane, Consultant – CTVS, and Dr. Pankaj Mhatre, Consultant – Nuclear Medicine, addressed the rising burden of heart disease, highlighting how changing lifestyles, late diagnoses, and increasing co-morbidities are driving a surge in complex cardiac cases. They emphasized the role of advanced interventions like TEER in improving patient outcomes and the importance of early screening, timely intervention, and awareness to prevent life-threatening complications. The session concluded with an engaging Q&A with media representatives, and a formal vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Shereen Hasan Bhat, Medical Superintendent, Manipal Hospital Goa.
The team further underscored the significance of making cutting-edge procedures available locally, thereby empowering patients and families to access world-class care closer to home. This milestone reaffirms Manipal Hospital Goa’s commitment to delivering advanced, patient-centric cardiac solutions while contributing to broader awareness around heart health on the occasion of World Heart Day.
